Should I Cancel My Aptera Reservation?

Back in June 2008 I put down my $500 deposit to reserve an Aptera which was promising production vehicles for late 2009! Well it’s almost 2010 and the only news to come out of Aptera is bad news. They had to layoff 10 employees, the two co-founders will temporarily be removed from day-to-day operations and that they have made changes to the body. To top it off they said the Aptera should be available in 2010. Would you believe them or are they just trying to buy time?

New Tesla 2011 Model S Video

tesla_model_s

I know i’ve reserved an Aptera, but i’m tempted to reserve the Model S instead. The more I learn about the Model S, the more practical and luxurious it seems. I know it cost $15k more than the Aptera but I mean look at it! The functional exterior designs, interior seating and cargo room, plus all the tech. Anyways enjoy the video!

Mitsubishi i-MiEV Electric Vehicle

mitsubishi_imeiv

It’s great to see more and more production ready electric vehicles hit the market like this  i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle). i-MiEV has a roomy interior for four adults and a sensible range of upwards of 100 miles from its advanced lithium-ion battery pack. Get me a fleet for my eco-friendly Taxi company!

i-MiEV doesn’t look that bad, kinda like a VW bug or a Yaris, and performance includes an ultra-quiet permanent magnet synchronous motor and a powerfully efficient lithium-ion battery pack that can be quick-charged up to 80 percent of capacity in as little as 30 minutes. An onboard charger accepts 110V (12-14 hour full-charge time) or 220V in half that time.

Lexus HS 250h Arriving Fall 2009

lexus_hs2501

When I first heard Lexus was making a specialty luxury hybrid, I was excited to see what sporty design they would go with. We’re glad it doesn’t look like a Prius, but sure looks alot like a Corolla! There’s really no word how much the HS 250h will cost or how many miles per gallon it will achieve, all we’ve heard is that it’s coming out this year.

I do admit the interior has a very luxrious feel, and the eco-friendly touches are nice like using sustainable castor seeds as the main material for the seat cushions, and 30% of the vehicle’s plastic interiors are made from ecological plant-derived plastics.

veggie_oil_car

VegAuto is a company that provides kits for converting diesel fueled vehicles to run on new or used vegetable oil, biodiesel and of course still run on diesel! VegAuto sells conversion kits from $600 to $1500 and installations cost around $1500, it may seem a little expensive but you can pickup veggie oil for free from restaurants that are typically happy to get rid of it and you get to help reduce emissions!

One of VegAuto’s most famous conversions were two Green Trucks, a mobile organic gourmet Mercedes Benz & Cummins powered coaches back in 2007. I eat at the Green Truck a couple times a week and never smell any exhaust fumes because veggie oil burns cleaner, plus veggie oil is has fewer chemical sand involves no drilling which can harm the environment.

Lucky Earth Waterless Carwash

lucky_earth_carwash

Lucky Earth says you can use their waterless car wash almost anywhere, anytime as long as the paint surface is not excessively soiled, muddy or caked with sand. Our products are water-based, natural and eco-friendly.

I was skeptical so I thought i’d buy a bottle to try it out and I think it’s great for cars that have dirt and dust from city driving, not so great for mud and off road dirt. I would recommed using at 2-3 microfiber towels since the stray seems to loosen the dirt from the paint and you wipe it up with the towel which gets soiled real quick. I say $17 is a small price to pay for conserving 40-60 gallons of water from washing your car, i’d definitely use it again.

Yesterday’s Aptera Event in San Diego

aptera_event2

Overall the turnout was good, there was a mix of seriosly interested people and casual on lookers. It was fun to see co-founders Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony, and the Aptera in person of course. I tried my best to keep tweets going with photos but twitterific on my iPhone was acting up so I switched over to TwitterFon app.

I’ve done tons of research on Aptera from their website and forums, I guess the only thing that was new to me last night was that they let us vote on 4 different interior designs. I think the latest Aptera 2e had design #1 created by Jason Hill’s company “11″.

I was sad there was only one Aptera 2e available to sit in, the line was very long and before my turn came up they took the Aptera away for test drives. I guess it was my luck since the guy behind me and then in front of me each won a raffle to ride in the Aptera. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to take pics of the interior as promised, hopefully I’ll get a chance next time if they visit Orange County!

Tesla Model S Now Taking Reservations

model_s

I’ve been anxiously awaiting for my Aptera, but now I got to see the official images of the new Tesla Model S and i’m not really sure which one to choose from? Model S can hold 5 more passengers (7 passengers total), go 200 more miles (300 miles total) on a charge, it has a 45 minute quick charge, and has a giant 17 inch infotainment.

Model S seems to have more of everything compared to the Aptera (even has one more wheel), but sometimes more isn’t better, like the cost… around $25,000 more ($50,000 total).  I’ll probably decide sometime next week if I should drop $5,000 down to reserve a Model S or just stick with the Aptera. Which vehicle do you think I should get?
