I just purchased one of these Biogreen bottles from Amazon.com and so far so good, the bottle is durable and leaves no after taste. I think this is the 4th reusable, BPA free bottle i’ve acquired since starting the greenerist site. The unique thing about these BPA, DEHA and DEHP free water bottles are that they can be recycled or can biodegrade in a landfill between 1-5 years after your using it.

I see a lot of my friends still not recycling batteries like they should but then again how would they know how? 0.5 % of landfill waste are batteries, not to mention the toxic chemicals from the batteries seep into the soil for years.
I was curious to know how batteries are recycled and found out they are heated to 1000 degree Celsius until cadmium gas vaporizes and collected in a condenser. The cadmium will be reused as a new battery or changed into scrap metal. Ideally rechargeable batteries like these USBCELLs are the way to go!
- Visit RBRC.org to locate a recycling drop off center for all types of dead rechargeable batteries.
- Waste Management Company offers a kit for you to mail in dry cell batteries to be recycled.
- Battery Solutions has a kit for you to mail in any type of battery to be recycled.

It seems like common sense, but a question we hear alot is “Can you recycle a pizza box”? In short, the answer is “yes”! But here are the rules, if the pizza box is dry without alot of greese, oil or cheese then you can put it in the recycling bin otherwise toss the pizza box in the compost bin. Many times the lid will be clean and the bottom is greasy, so just tear the lid off and throw that in the recycling bin and the other greasy part in the compost bin.

A couple of years ago, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf introduced more eco-friendly practices like using glass or ceramic mugs for customers sitting in to cut down on waste. Last week I was at my local Coffee Bean at the Irvine Market Place and noticed they had the usual trash bin on one side of the entrance and a recycle bin on the other side.
In my opinion having a recycle bin at Coffee Bean is awesome! Since all their paper and plastic cups are the type of materials that can easily be recycled.

This Naked Binder is made from water-based glue, 97% post-consumer waste plus 3% recycled-material binders board manufactured in the United States with waste paper from the state of Connecticut. The Project Binder is far stronger than a vinyl binder and can take at least 50,000 flexes.

These eco-friendly boots from Timberland cost around $150. So what makes them eco-friendly? More than 50% of the shoe is made from recycled plastic soda bottles, organic cotton is used and the outsole is made from 15% recycled rubber.

Don’t throw it out, just like everything else, it can be recycled. Good Will Industries, Amvets and Salvation Army take clothes that are not salable on their floor and sell them to other industries that recycle them by turning them into cleaning cloths or playground equipment. They even sell them overseas to Asia. Keep them out of our landfills.

What do those numbers on the bottom of bottles mean? Which leaks out chemicals and which do not? Stay away from 1,3,6 and 7. Some 7’s are BPA free when they are mixed with the word “other” or say it when you buy the bottle. The softer plastics are the ones that leaks out BPA (Bisphenol A) and if not properly recycled can go back into our water system.

Some people don’t realize that their laptop, mp3 player or old TV may contain many harmful chemicals and materials that end up in landfills. For example many electronics contain mercury and 1/70 of a teaspoon can contaminate 20 acres of a lake making the fish unsafe to eat. First thing you can do is sell your electronics if they are still working, donate them to the goodwill, otherwise recycle them at a proper e-waste recycling center. Below are some links to help you properly get rid of your e-waste:
Costco – Trade-in and recycle powered by GreenSight.
FedEx Kinkos – Properly disposes your old cell phone and cell phone batteries.
SecondRotation – Get cash for your gadgets.
GCycle - Helps you find a local e-waste recycling center.
